BalaphoneLarger Text + | Smaller Text - The balaphone (also known as balafone, balafon, or bala) is an African xylophone comprised of wooden slats mounted on some form of resonance body such as a wooden box (gourds are used in traditional designs). Each slat is tuned to a specific note on the musical scale. It can therefore be used to produce melodies and harmonies. The balaphone is played with two (or even four) rubber mallets. It produces a beautiful soft melodic tone. In addition to playing African rhythms, it can be used in many musical styles and settings. Drum kit drummers can incorporate the balaphone into their set up to add new sounds to their music. Percussionists can use it to produce beautiful percussion effects and harmonies. It can be taken to a drum circle to provide melodies that complement the drum sounds. And, even musicians who are not drummers can use balaphones to add another dimension to their music. This is a wonderful percussion instrument and is very versatile. It would definitely be a great addition to any drummer's or percussionist's drum set up. Monthly Specials For May |
