Djembe![]() Larger Text + | Smaller Text - The popular djembe (also known as djimbe, jenbe, jembe, yembe, or sanbanyi) is probably the African hand drum people are most familiar with. It is a drum that has a very long history in Africa and has become very widespread throughout the world. A mainstay in every drum circle, it is often the first hand drum new drummers purchase. Like the ashiko, it has one drumhead on the widest end and none on the other. The body is usually made of wood, however, some models are also made of fibreglass. The djembe is played with both hands. It is positioned vertically between the legs and can be played sitting or standing (held by a strap or supported on a stand). The unique design of the djembe drum is probably one of the reasons for its popularity. It is a goblet-shaped drum, which gives it very unique acoustical properties. A wide range of tones can be achieved from the deep bass tone produced by hitting the drumhead in the centre, to the sharper, higher slap tone produced at the edge, and the fuller sound of the tone hit. Experienced players can even coax many more interesting sounds out of the drum. The djembe is, of course, an important part of many African rhythm ensembles. And what would a drum circle be without a collection of djembes beating out the beautiful drum rhythms? However, the extreme versatility and wide-ranging sound qualities of the djembe make it an excellent addition to any musical group set up. It is definitely a drum every drummer or percussionist should have as part of his or her drum set up.
