Gome![]() Larger Text + | Smaller Text - The gome is a rectangular, or octagonal box-shaped drum with a drumhead on one side and open on the other. It resembles a small table. This very interesting drum provides the rhythmic basis for drummers playing some African rhythms and is also known as the Ghanaian bass drum. The gome is played by positioning it on its side (with the drumhead facing forward). The drummer then sits on top of the drum and plays it with his or her hands. The gome produces a very deep tone when hit near the centre of the drumhead, while a higher pitched sound can be created when the drummer hits the drumhead near the edges. Pressing the heels of the feet against the drumhead while it is hit with the hands can further modify the pitch. Additionally, the gome can be played with soft mallets. This drum would be an excellent addition to an African drum group. Its deep bass tone would also fit in very well in any drum circle. It is a very unusual and versatile hand drum that can be used in a wide variety of musical arrangements. Monthly Specials For May |
