Brazilian Drums and Brazilian Percussion Instruments

Drums and other percussion instruments figure prominently in many forms of Brazilian music, such as the popular musical style of samba with all its many variations. It is very exciting to see (and hear) a large percussion group (bateria) playing many Brazilian percussion instruments such as the surdo, pandeiro, tamborim, cuica, caixa, and repinique, to name a few. Those not familiar with Brazilian drums and other percussion instruments will find them to be interesting and versatile. They provide an exciting alternative to the more familiar African and Latin drums.

The rise in popularity of samba groups in many countries around the world demonstrates the appeal of playing Brazilian drums. The lively rhythms, energetic performances, and infectious qualities of the music incite drummers to be part of the action. Whether they are providing the deep pulse of the group with a surdo, the sharp repinique sound, the more complex caixa rhythms, or the high-pitched tamborim tone, drummers can feel the excitement while playing.

Apart from playing Brazilian or samba rhythms, drummers and percussionists can utilize Brazilian drums in other musical styles. For a different sound, drum set players can use a caixa (Brazilian snare drum) instead of or in addition to a conventional snare drum. Other Brazilian drums such as a surdo, repinique, and even a zabumba can also augment a conventional drum set arrangement. The possibilities for producing a unique sound are wide-ranging.

Brazilian drums can also be taken to a drum circle. Drums such as the timbal, tumbala, and timbak would provide some interesting new sounds to a drum circle that is usually dominated by djembes. It is very likely that some of the drum circle participants may have never seen, let alone played some of these wonderful drums.

In an unplugged or acoustic set up, the subtler tantan, rebolo, and repique de mao can be used. These versatile drums can be used in a variety of musical styles to give a drummer an entirely different sound than what would be obtained from the more usual choices of drums. Drummers and percussionist can also utilize other Brazilian percussion instruments such as the pandeiro, tamborim, and the unusual cuica. These unique instruments can produce many interesting rhythms and percussion effects.

Brazilian drums and other Brazilian percussion instruments offer drummers and percussionists the ability to participate in the exciting world of Brazilian music and rhythms. However, these wonderful drums can also greatly enhance many other musical styles and venues. The main thing is just to try them and see what unique sounds can be generated.
