PandeiroLarger Text + | Smaller Text - The pandeiro is a Brazilian tambourine with some significant differences compared to a "regular" tambourine. The natural skin or plastic drumhead is tuneable allowing the percussionist to alter the tone. Additionally, the jingles mounted in the frame of the pandeiro have a drier and less sustained sound. It is available in different sizes each capable of producing its own unique sounds. The pandeiro is truly an incredible percussion instrument. It is far more versatile than a basic tambourine. An indication of its significance in different musical styles is that it is considered by some to be Brazil's national instrument. In the hands of an experienced percussionist, the pandeiro is able to produce sounds and rhythms one would not think possible out of a single small instrument. To play the pandeiro, the percussionist holds it in one hand and plays it by hitting the drumhead with the other. The hand that holds the pandeiro is positioned with the thumb resting on the top of the drumhead near the edge and the other fingers holding the frame. The thumb and middle finger can be used to muffle the sound by pressing on the drumhead's top or bottom respectively. The dominant hand hits the top of the drumhead using the fingertips, thumb, full hand, or heel of the hand to produce different sounds. Other sounds are also possible. The pandeiro is much more than a simple percussion instrument. It is a highly versatile drum capable of producing a wide range of interesting and complex sounds and rhythms. Whether the percussionist prefers to play traditional Brazilian rhythms or any other musical styles, the pandeiro is a wonderful addition to his or her drum and percussion set up.
