Rebolo

Larger Text + | Smaller Text -

The rebolo is a cylindrical drum with a wood shell and a single drumhead mounted on one end, the other end being open. It is similar to a Brazilian tantan but is smaller. It is typically used in Brazilian pagode groups, which are small samba ensembles. It serves as a bass drum in settings where more subtle drums are preferred.

To play the rebolo, the drummer positions it horizontally across his or her lap if sitting, or held by a strap if standing. The dominant hand is used to hit the centre or edge of the drumhead. The less dominant hand rests on top of the drum with the hand hitting the shell.

Rebolos can be used anywhere lower volume drums are desired such as an acoustic set up. In addition to its use in Brazilian samba and pagode, a rebolo can be utilized in a wide variety of musical styles. The addition of a rebolo to a drummer's set up will greatly increase his or her percussion repertoire.
