Surdo![]() Larger Text + | Smaller Text - The surdo is a bass drum. It is a large cylindrical drum with a wood or metal shell and a plastic or natural skin drumhead mounted on each end. In a Brazilian samba group (bateria) it produces the deep pulse that drives the music. Surdos come in several different sizes each performing a different function in the bateria. There are also shallower versions that are easier to carry and are not quite as loud as the deeper surdos. Surdos are usually worn at the hip suspended on a waist or shoulder strap. Surdo drummers usually play the drum by hitting one drumhead with one mallet and using the other bare hand to hit the drumhead or muffle the mallet hit. In other styles of Brazilian music, drummers may use two mallets. In addition to providing the foundation for Brazilian samba music, surdos can be used for other styles of music. Drum set drummers can also incorporate different-sized surdos into their drum kits to produce many new and interesting sounds. Additionally, surdos can be used as the bass drum component in many other percussive arrangements. The possibilities are wide ranging.
