Timbak Larger Text + | Smaller Text - The timbak is a hybrid drum similar to a Brazilian timbal but with a different head. It is a conical-shaped drum similar to an African ashiko but has a thin wood shell making it very light. There is one plastic head mounted on the larger opening with the other end left open. It is played with the hands in the vertical position (like a djembe). Due to the type of drumhead used and the tighter tuning, the timbak can produce a sharp crack when struck. The timbak would be an excellent addition to any drummer's or percussionist's drum set up. It can be used in many different musical styles. It can also be taken to drum circles to provide a refreshing alternative to the deeper sounds of the djembe and djun djun. A timbak's versatility and range of possible sounds make it a great addition to many musical styles. This gives a drummer yet another choice to further expand his or her musical horizons.
