The timbal (also timba, timbau) is a conical-shaped drum similar to an African ashiko but has a thin wood (or metal) shell making it very light. There is one plastic head mounted on the larger opening with the other end left open. It is usually played with the hands in the vertical position (like a djembe) but can also be played horizontally laying across a drummer's lap. In this setting, the drummer will use one hand on the drumhead and the other on the body of the drum. The timbal is commonly used in many styles of Brazilian music such as samba and pagode.

The timbal is an exceptional hand drum possessing incredible versatility. It comes in a variety of sizes so drummers can produce many different sounds depending on the size chosen. A timbal is capable of producing deep bass sounds as well as sharp slap tones.
