Cymbals

Cymbals are a common fixture in drum kits, orchestras, marching bands, and percussion groups. The instrument we now know as the modern cymbal has a long and interesting history. The most common material used in cymbal production is bronze, which consists of an alloy of copper and tin. However, other metals and alloys may also be used in some cymbal models. Regardless of the material used, cymbals are indispensable percussion instruments.

Cymbals basically consist of a raised center section (usually but not always) called a bell or cup and a bow, which constitutes the rest of the cymbal. Larger diameter cymbals will generally be louder and have a longer sustain. By altering the weight of a cymbal, manufacturers can obtain different sound properties. A heavier cymbal is usually louder, whereas those that are thinner have a faster response. Additionally, different cymbal profiles can yield varying pitch characteristics.

A standard drum kit will usually include a ride, hi-hat set, and one or more crash cymbals. Other types may also be present including splash, china, and other effects cymbals.

Specialty cymbals are made for specific music forms, such as rock, jazz, heavy metal, etc. The many different cymbal designs and types available ensure that drummers and percussionists can find instruments for any musical style.
