They are currently used by a wide variety of people in many different musical styles. Frame drums are a category of drums that consists of a shallow, round (usually but not always) frame with a single natural skin or synthetic drumhead mounted on one end and the other end left open (usually). The frame can be made of wood (laminated or solid) or other materials such as metal or synthetics. The drumhead can be tuneable or not, depending on the type of frame drum.Frame drums are highly versatile and portable, which makes them an ideal drum for virtually any musical setting. They come in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and configurations, each with its own unique sounds and tonal ranges. Some frame drums have jingles, snares, or other unique additions giving them more possible sound capabilities. They are played with one or two hands, often through the use of complex finger movements, or with mallets or various styles of drumsticks. Some variations of frame drums include: Middle Eastern drums such as the bendir, def, or riqq; Brazilian versions such as the pandeiro, or tamborim; an Italian frame drum called a tamburello; or other versions such as the pandariq, or freehand. Each of these wonderful drums is capable of producing a wide variety of sounds and percussion effects. The sound and rhythm possibilities are wide-ranging. By adding any or many frame drums to a drummer's or percussionist's drum set up, he or she can greatly expand the range of sounds that can be produced. These drums can be used to supplement and enhance (or even replace) a drum kit set up. They can be used in low or high volume settings. And, they can be taken to drum circles to add a different dimension to the group. The possibilities are virtually endless. Frame drums are definitely a great addition to any musical setting. |
