The Schlagwerk Bendir is an especially popular frame drum. The construction of the frame is similar to the Def but there are some notable differences. The most significant is the presence of four snare strings contacting the bottom (inside the frame) of the drumhead. When the bendir is struck, the strings vibrate against the head creating a snare effect. Additionally, the bendir has a grip hole in the frame that allows the player to hold the drum by inserting his or her thumb. These design attributes make the bendir a very interesting and versatile drum.
The bendir produces lively, high-pitched tones when struck on the frame, and a deep, resonant, warm bass sound when hit closer to the centre. Added to these sounds is the buzzing of the snare strings that is distinct and clear, particularly when the higher-pitched tones are created.
With natural goatskin heads, Schlagwerk's frame drums are remarkable in tonal range sound qualities. These drums reward the player with an exciting variety of sounds when played in the traditional manner. Striking the drums on the frame underscores the unbelievable dynamics of these instruments by producing high and singing tones.
Innovative design, high-quality construction, and exceptional tonal characteristics are the hallmarks of this bendir. Complementing the high-quality, natural goatskin head is a frame made from six glued layers of beech wood. The frame has a diameter of 40 cm (approx. 16"). The head is fully tuneable with tuning screws integrated into the frame. These tuning screws allow the player to precisely tune the drum to his or her preferences.
Schlagwerk's attention to detail, skilled craftsmanship, and innovation are reflected in all their products. Their frame drums are no exception. For more than 25 years, Schlagwerk Percussion has been intensively developing their products, which have gained worldwide recognition. By using original Arabian, Asian, Indian, and Irish frame drums as traditional examples, Schlagwerk has designed frame drums that not only pay homage to their predecessors, but also set the standards by which other frame drums are judged.
Due to its unique range of sounds, versatility, and compact, lightweight design, the Schlagwerk Bendir can be taken anywhere and used in any musical setting. This is a professional-class drum that any serious drummer or percussionist would be proud to own and play.
