PandariqLarger Text + | Smaller Text - The pandariq is a very interesting frame drum. Being a frame drum, it has a shallow, wood frame with a natural skin drumhead attached to one end and the other end left open. The drumhead is tuneable through the use of internal tuning screws. The unique characteristic of the pandariq is that it is a combination of a Brazilian pandeiro, an Afghani dairi, and an Arabic riq. Attached to the internal cross frame are four removable jingle bars, each with four hand-hammered jingles. This addition allows the pandariq to produce many interesting sounds. To play the pandariq, the drummer or percussionist holds it vertically (with the drumhead perpendicular to the floor) on his or her lap while sitting. The drum is then played using both hands with a combination of finger movements. Hits closer to the centre produce deep, resonant, bass tones, while hitting the drumhead near the rim creates higher-pitched sounds. The presence of the jingles allows the drummer to create additional "tambourine-like" effects. The pandariq is without a doubt an awesome frame drum. The wide range of tones and effects it is capable of producing is very impressive. Deep, bass tones, higher-pitched sounds, and the metallic jingle effects are just some of the possibilities. Additionally, the jingles can be removed thus converting the pandariq into a more "conventional" frame drum. A drummer can also remove only some of the jingles and leave the others for reduced jingle effects. In essence, it is several drums in one. The versatility of this drum is astounding. Drum circles would greatly benefit from the addition of a pandariq. With or without the jingles in place, it would add a new dimension to a group often dominated by djembes. The pandariq can be used in many musical styles and settings. The possibilities are virtually endless. This incredible drum is a definite "must have" for any drummer or percussionist who is looking for a unique sound. Monthly Specials For May |
