The tamburello is an Italian frame drum that has roots going back thousands of years. It is a small frame drum similar to a tambourine with a shallow wood frame. It has a natural skin (traditionally) drumhead attached to one side with the other side left open. The frame contains a number of pairs of metal jingles. The tamburello is used extensively in Italian music and is extremely popular.

To play the tamburello, the drummer or percussionist holds it with one hand (with the hand placed at the bottom) and plays it with the other hand. The fingers of the supporting hand wrap around the frame and rest on the edge of the drumhead. In this position, the fingers are able to muffle the drum hit if desired. The drum is sometimes held more or less vertically (with the drumhead perpendicular to the ground), however, it can also be tilted towards the ground. It can be played either standing or sitting.

The varied sounds and effects are produced by a combination of full hand and different finger movements in the centre, at the rim, or anywhere in between. The playing hand can also be rapidly rocked back-and-forth from the thumb to the opposite side of the hand, which produces a constant jingle sound.

The Italian tamburello has a design similar to that of the Brazilian pandeiro and Arabic riqq. Like the pandeiro and riqq, it is much more than a simple tambourine. In the hands of an experienced drummer or percussionist, the tamburello is capable of producing a wide range of sounds and effects. This is a very versatile drum that can be used in many ways in a number of musical styles. Whether the drummer or percussionist prefers to play traditional Italian rhythms or other styles of music, the tamburello will fit in well.

Drum kit drummers could add it to their drum set up to add a new dimension to their music.
