Latin![]() Larger Text + | Smaller Text - Latin Drums and Latin Percussion InstrumentsLatin American countries have produced many interesting styles of music. Much of this music became very popular. As a result, some of the Latin percussion instruments used in Latin music have become very familiar, even to those who do not play drums and other percussion instruments. Some styles of Latin music were heavily influenced by African rhythms. Similarly, since some Latin percussion instruments also had roots in Africa, they bear a resemblance to the original African versions in both appearance and sound. The addition of European influences also helped to produce rhythms and percussion instruments that are both interesting and exciting. Due to the popularity and familiarity of Latin percussion instruments, they were and are used extensively in many other musical styles in addition to Latin music. Bongo and conga drums are two of the most familiar Latin percussion instruments and are used in both Latin music and other musical styles. Timbales are also an important component of Latin music as well as other musical forms. In addition to the more common bongos, congas, and timbales, the bata, tambora, cajon, and marimbula are some other percussion instruments considered to be part of the Latin percussion group. Like the bongo and conga drums, these additional Latin percussion instruments can be used for both Latin and other styles of music. For a unique sound, a drummer or percussionist can add drums such as the cajinto or yambu to his or her set up. Although these all-wood drums are similar to a conga, their thin wood head gives them a totally different sound. Using these drums would greatly increase the range of sounds a drummer can produce giving him or her a unique sound. Latin music and Latin percussion instruments have had a profound effect on the musical landscape. By playing these instruments, drummers and percussionists become both recipients of, and participants in this legacy. Latin drums and percussion instruments have definitely enriched the world of music. |
