Conga drums are definitely one of the more familiar Latin percussion drums. They are a tall, cylindrical drum with tapered ends and a wood stave (traditionally) or fibreglass shell. A single natural skin (usually) drumhead is mounted on one end with the other end left open. There are different sizes of conga drums each capable of producing different tones. Although there is some disparity about the actual names for each size, they can be generally referred to as (from largest to smallest): supertumba, tumba (or tumbadora), conga, quinto, and requinto. A drummer many use just one, or any number of differently sized conga drums in his or her set up.

Conga drums are played vertically, suspended off the floor in a stand or, if no stand is used, positioned with the bottom end resting on the floor. They are played using the hands with the drummer either sitting or standing. Bass tones are achieved by hitting the drumhead in the centre with the palm of the hand, while higher-pitched sounds are produced by hitting the head with the fingers near the rim. Additional tones come from muffling the hits with the hand as well lightly touching the fingers or heel of the hand on the drumhead.

The extensive use of conga drums in Latin music and many other musical styles has made them very popular and well known. These are drums that can be used in many musical arrangements. They can be played on their own, or in combination with other hand drums or a drum set. Conga drums can be used in drum circles, and they can enhance a drum set arrangement by giving the drum set player the ability to produce additional rhythms. The versatility of conga drums makes them good additions to any drum set up.
