Tambora

Larger Text + | Smaller Text -

The tambora is a small wood-shelled drum with a natural skin drumhead on each end. It is an essential part of the Latin musical style of merengue that originated in the Dominican Republic. The tambora drum is played by holding it horizontally on a drummer's lap. One drumhead is hit with the hand while the drummer uses a wooden drumstick to hit the other drumhead and rim. The rim hit can sound like a wood block and provides a rhythmic filler. The tambora can also be tuned to give it a conga-like sound.

The tambora is a very versatile drum. In addition to its use in merengue, it can be used in other musical styles. The ability to play it with the hands or drumsticks gives it a lot of flexibility in terms of what it can be used for. It can be taken to a drum circle for totally different sound possibilities. A drum set player could set it up on a stand and use it to create new and interesting rhythms. And, it can be used anywhere else hand drums are appropriate. It is definitely an interesting drum to add to one's set up.
