Timbales

Larger Text + | Smaller Text -

Timbales (timbale) are metal-shelled (although some have wood shells) shallow drums. One plastic drumhead in mounted on the top end with the bottom end left open. The drumhead is generally tuned tightly to produce a high-pitched sharp sound when struck. There are a variety of sizes available each producing different tones. Timbales are commonly used in many forms of Latin music as well as other musical styles. Their distinctive sounds make them popular additions to many musical arrangements.

Timbales are usually played with straight wooden drumsticks (with no shoulder or head); however, they can also be played with regular drumsticks. The drums are commonly played mounted on a stand in pairs with the two sizes usually differing by one inch. Drummers can also have more than two sizes in the set up if desired. Generally timbales are played while standing, however, sitting is also possible. Timbales are played by hitting the drumheads, rims, and even the shells (called cascara), as well as other percussion instruments such as cowbells, blocks, and even cymbals.

Timbales are important to Latin music, however, because of their versatility and wide range of sound possibilities, they can be used in many musical styles. Drum set players can greatly expand the range of sounds they produce if they add timbales to their drum kit set up. These are interesting and exciting drums and excellent additions for any drummer or percussionist.
