Middle Eastern![]() Larger Text + | Smaller Text - Middle Eastern Drums and Middle Eastern Percussion InstrumentsThe roots of Middle Eastern music go back thousands of years. The music that fits into this rather broad category resulted from the influences of both ancient and more recent cultures, and from a diverse range of people in many countries. The percussion instruments that developed over this time period are popular not only in Middle Eastern music, but in other musical styles as well. Drummers and percussionists benefit from this long musical history every time they play Middle Eastern drums and other percussion instruments.Middle Eastern drumming is known for its often lively, complex, and quick rhythms. In the hands of an experienced drummer, a Middle Eastern drum is capable of producing an incredible variety of sounds and effects. Traditional Middle Eastern drum rhythms are both exciting and infectious, and prompt drummers to want to pick up a drum and play along. Various forms of goblet-shaped drums form the basis of much of Middle Eastern music. The design of these drums allows for the crisp tones and unique sounds necessary for Middle Eastern rhythms. These drums are also gaining increasing popularity in other forms of music. The familiar doumbek (also called dumbek or dumbelek) or darbuka (also called darabuka, or darbouka) are often one of the first hand drums a drummer may purchase. The crisp and sharp tones these drums produce fit very well into a variety of musical styles including drum circles. Frame drums are also heavily used in Middle Eastern rhythms. The bendir, def (also called daf, deff, or duff), and riqq (also called riq or rik) are all very versatile frame drums capable of producing many unique and interesting sounds. These highly portable hand drums can be taken anywhere, and a drummer or percussionist can use them in a variety of settings and with many different musical styles. Drum circles are definitely a good place to use these wonderful drums. Participating in Middle Eastern drumming is yet another way a drummer or percussionist can expand his or her percussion repertoire. It is exciting and often challenging to master the complex rhythms. Drummers can also use these wonderful drums to add many unique sounds to other musical styles they are interested in playing. Middle Eastern drums are definitely a great addition to any drummer's or percussionist's drum set up. |
