ShakersLarger Text + | Smaller Text - Percussion shakers are basically containers filled with something that makes a noise when shaken. Shakers may be made of wood, metal, or a synthetic material; may be cylindrical, rectangular, or another shape; and may contain different materials each with its own unique sound. Shakers may also have different designs that allow them to produce a variety of shaking effects. To play percussion shakers, the drummer or percussionist shakes them (obviously) to produce any rhythms he or she desires. They can be played alone or more than one can be played at once. They can be shaken in any number of rhythms and variations and/or hit against a hand to produce interesting effects. And, since they come in a variety of configurations, tones, and designs, the percussionist can choose the one that will produce the sound he or she desires. Shakers can be used to add a variety of percussion effects to many musical settings. The versatility and wide variety of sound variations makes them invaluable additions to any percussionist's set up. Drum kit drummers can use them for songs that call for a softer form of percussion, percussionists can use them for many musical styles, and they can be taken to drum circles to add interesting sounds to the drum rhythms. A collection of percussion shakers is a definite "must have" for any drummer and percussionist.
