Tuned Percussion Instruments

The category of tuned percussion (also called pitched percussion) refers to percussion instruments that are tuned to specific pitches or musical notes. This characteristic sets tuned percussion instruments apart from other percussion instruments in that they can be used to play melodies and harmonies, rather than providing mainly rhythmic functions. They can also be used to create interesting and unique percussion effects to further enhance a musical setting.

Tuned percussion instruments originated from several different cultures. For example, the balaphone originated in Africa, and the marimbula came from Cuba. They have long histories of use in the traditional music of these cultures. Tuned percussion instruments are also used in many other musical styles. Their versatility and unique sound characteristics make them well-suited for inclusion in a variety of musical settings.

If a drummer or percussionist wishes to expand his or her range of possible percussion sounds, a balaphone (also known as balafone, balafon, or bala) or marimbula (also called calimba, bass kalimba, rumba box, marimba, or malimba) can be added. These tuned percussion instruments are capable of producing some very interesting sounds. Their soft melodic tones would greatly enhance and complement many forms of music.

Another wonderful tuned percussion instrument is the tongue drum (also called log drum or sometimes slit drum). These great instruments come in a variety of sizes and are tuned to several different musical scales. They are very versatile and their soft harmonic sounds blend in well with lower volume music.

For some interesting percussion effects, a drummer or percussionist can incorporate various tubes and rods into his or her percussion set up. These beautiful instruments are tuned to specific musical notes and are capable of producing many great sounds. The clear, high-pitched tones are very impressive and would be a great addition to many forms of music.

Tuned percussion instruments are much more than simple percussion effects creators. They are significant musical instruments that can play a large role in musical melodies and harmonies. These instruments are wonderful additions for many drummers and percussionists who wish to add new dimensions to their music. They are also for musicians who may not be drummers or percussionist at all. Since these instruments are tuned to specific musical notes and scales, other musicians can also use them to create interesting melodies and harmonies. The possibilities are virtually endless.
