Tongue drums (also called log drums or sometimes slit drums) consist of a wood resonator box that is enclosed on all sides. In the top of the box, slits are made such that the wood "tongues" have a cut on three sides. Each tongue has a different length (or shape), which gives a different tone when hit. Through careful design and manufacturing techniques, the tongues can be made to produce specific musical pitches. The entire tongue drum can then be tuned to a specific musical scale.

There are several different tongue drum models having varying numbers of tongues cut into the top (for example four, six, eight, or ten tongues). The drums may also be made of different types of wood or be a different size, thereby giving each its own unique sound. This allows percussionists to choose which tongue drum to use for creating the musical notes they desire.

To play a tongue drum, the musician hits the tongues with rubber-head mallets. He or she may also hit the tongues with fingertips to produce a quieter sound. The various tones combine to create a soft, melodious sound. Since each tongue drum is tuned to specific pitches, each note blends together in beautiful harmony.

Tongue drums are genuine musical instruments not merely effects generators. Their soft melodious tones can complement many musical styles. Drummers and percussionists, as well as any other musicians, would benefit greatly from the addition of tongue drums to their set ups.
