MarimbulaLarger Text + | Smaller Text - The marimbula (also called calimba, bass kalimba, rumba box, marimba, or malimba) is considered a Caribbean bass. Although it has roots in Africa, it essentially originated in Cuba. The marimbula's function is similar to that of a bass guitar in a group. The design of the marimbula is basically a wood resonator box (like a cajon) with a number of springy, metal tongues attached to the front face. Each of these tongues is capable of producing a different tone. To play a marimbula, the percussionist sits on it and plucks the tongues with his or her fingers. Clearer tones can also be achieved by hitting the tongues with mallets. These tongues are set to match musical scales, and can be adjusted to produce the desired musical notes. Marimbulas are starting to become more popular and are being used in a variety of musical styles. Their subtle tones fit well into many percussion set ups. They can even be taken to a drum circle to produce some interesting rhythms. Their sound is very unique and different and as such, they are good percussion instruments to add to any drummer's or percussionist's set up. Monthly Specials For May |
