Bendir

Larger Text + | Smaller Text -

The bendir is a frame drum that originated in North Africa. It has a shallow, circular, wood frame and a natural skin drumhead attached to one side with the other side left open. The frame has a grip hole cut through it that allows the drummer to hold the bendir by inserting his or her thumb. A distinguishing characteristic of the bendir is that snare wires are attached to the inside of the drum such that they contact the bottom of the drumhead. This allows the bendir to produce a snare drum effect.

The traditional way of playing the bendir has the drummer holding the drum with one hand while hitting it with the other. The drum is held with the top of the drumhead angled towards the floor. The full hand is used to play the bendir in either an open or closed hit. The rim is rarely struck.

The bendir is a very interesting drum. In addition to the deep bass tones it is capable of producing, the snare wires add a unique buzzing effect when it is hit. This is definitely a drum that, in addition to playing Middle Eastern rhythms, is also suited for many other forms of music and musical settings. The bendir would be a great addition to a drum circle since the snare drum effect would add an interesting new dimension to the usual djembe-dominated rhythms. It would also be well suited to a smaller acoustic set up. The possibilities for using the bendir are certainly wide ranging.
