DefLarger Text + | Smaller Text - The def (also known as daf, deff, dap, or duff) is a frame drum with a shallow, circular, wood shell. A natural skin drumhead is attached to one end with the other end left open. The def is capable of producing a soft deep tone when hit, which makes it ideal for playing in lower volume settings. It is typically used to produce bass rhythms. To play the def, the drummer holds it vertically (with the drumhead perpendicular to the ground) by supporting it with one hand placed under the bottom edge of the drum. The fingers of the supporting hand are then free to play on the edge of the drumhead. The drummer then uses the fingers of the other hand to hit the drumhead in different spots to produce different tones. The def is a great drum to use for settings where soft deep tones are desired. It can be used in a wide variety of musical styles. Additionally, it is a great drum to use in a drum circle to add some interesting sounds.
