Riqq

Larger Text + | Smaller Text -

The riqq (also known as riq, rik, rikk, or reqq) is a small Arabic frame drum similar to a tambourine with a shallow, wood frame. It has a tuneable, natural skin (usually) drumhead attached to one side with the other side left open. The frame contains a number of pairs of metal jingles. The riqq is used extensively in Arabic music and is capable of producing a variety of sounds.

To play the riqq, the drummer usually stands. This allows him or her to play it in many elaborate ways such as above the head or lower down, as well as playing it horizontally or vertically. It can also be played while sitting if desired. The drummer holds the riqq by grasping the frame between the thumb and index finger with the thumb on the inside of the frame and the index finger on the edge of the drumhead. The riqq is then hit with one or more fingers of the free hand at the edge of the drumhead or near the centre to produce different tones. The jingles can also be manipulated with the fingers to produce additional sounds.

Like the Brazilian pandeiro, the Arabic riqq is much more than a simple tambourine. It is capable of producing many interesting and unique tones. An experienced drummer or percussionist can use the riqq to create many exciting rhythms and sounds. This is a very versatile and interesting percussion instrument that can be used in a variety of ways for many different musical styles. It can even be used in a drum circle to provide some exciting new rhythms.
